Ten Questions

To answer after a relapse

These ten questions are designed to help you take a look at your relapse.

Before you start them, give yourself a pat on the back for recognizing that you need to look at this in order to continue with your recovery.

The following questions have been designed to help give you an understanding of what might have happened to cause you to relapse and of some of the high risk areas you need to work on. When you are finished with the ten questions, you should be presenting them to your addictions counselor, support group or person that is involved in your recovery. Why do you have to do this? To break the silence. People that have drug/alcohol problems usually DON'T talk about it. People who are in recovery DO.

1. What happened? Who were you with? Where did it happen? When did it happen?
2. When did you decide you were going to use?
3. What did you (try to) do to stop yourself from relapsing?
4. What were your reasons for relapse?
5. What were some of the signs you experienced?
6. What have you learned about recovery and personal responsibility?
7. What did you learn about yourself? (Your pattern of drug or alcohol use.)
8. What can you do to prevent this from happening again?
9. Are you going to continue in recovery? Have you stopped denying that you have a problem?
10. What message would you give to other people with addictions problems regarding your experience and what you have learned?
